People across the country suffer from allergies, which tend to get worse as the seasons change. Springtime is a common time of year to experience allergic reactions, but wintertime is often just as bad or worse for those who have allergies. If you’re sneezing, coughing, or experiencing other allergy symptoms in the Jefferson, Louisiana area, follow these tips to improve indoor air quality and help reduce allergies.

Check Out the Flooring

If you have a lot of carpeting in your home, allergens could be trapped inside the fibers. If it’s a possibility to replace the flooring, choose something like hardwood or laminate that won’t catch dust, dirt, and dander. But if you can’t swap out the materials, simply vacuum more often to keep the allergens from getting into the HVAC system. It’s also smart to choose a vacuum that has an HEPA filter that will help trap tiny particles.

Choose the Right Filters

Changing the filters in your heating system will also help improve the indoor air quality, but it’s important to choose the right filters. Don’t pick the cheapest, most basic filters available, because these won’t filter out the dust, pet hair, dander, pollen, and other air particles that decrease the quality of your indoor air. Instead, find filter options that rate higher in terms of allergies and filtration.

Replace Window Treatments

If you have drapes on your windows at home, these pieces of fabric are probably housing a lot of dust. Take the drapes down frequently and wash them to get rid of dust. If they aren’t washable options, consider replacing them with some that are, or putting up blinds instead.

Clean Up the Bedroom

When you’re asleep, it’s common to experience allergy symptoms that cause you to wake up with discomfort. You can take a few steps to allergy-proof your bedroom and improve the way you feel in the morning. Pick up an allergen-blocking fabric or plastic cover for your mattress, since this is a spot where dust mites tend to live. You can also keep your pets out of the bedroom.
