New Orleans, LA Air Conditioning Repair & Service

History

Although New Orleans was officially founded in 1718, the area had been used for years as a trade route by the natives who inhabited the land. French traders and explorers first visited the area in the 1690s and established Fort Saint John in 1701. Due to its proximity to the trade route, the French soon realized that the higher ground near the mouth of the Mississippi River was a good place for a permanent settlement. The governor of French Louisiana christened the new settlement Nouvelle Orleans in honor of the Duke of Orleans, who was the acting ruler of France.

Over the next few years, the new city experienced a great deal of turmoil, including a major hurricane, two fires and changes in leadership. After many of the original buildings had been destroyed by the fire of 1794, they were rebuilt using bricks. The Saint Louis Cathedral, the Cabildo and the Presbytere are still standing today. Before the Louisiana Purchase made it part of the United States, the city went back and forth between Spanish and French rule. As a result, many buildings were built in the Spanish colonial style, but the majority of the population spoke French.

During the War of 1812, Andrew Jackson led the defense against the British in the Battle of New Orleans. Unlike other parts of the South, New Orleans was spared from any major destruction during the Civil War. During the 1920s, the city became known for its jazz music and vibrant nightlife. Because of its colorful history and status as a major port city, New Orleans became home to an eclectic mix of people. Advances in technology allowed swamp areas to be drained, and new homes were built in places that were formerly uninhabitable. Consequently, the city’s population grew. After World War II, New Orleans became a popular tourist destination, and its yearly Mardi Gras celebration became a huge attraction. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans continues to evolve.
